Waterlike Oceans

28-096H – Alexander

Not bad, for 2CP.

Activating all you Forwards at the end of your Main Phase 2 seems like a good idea.

Or you can bait your opponent into trying to break a dull Forward, and then Alexander comes out and activates all of your Forwards, canceling it.

Yeah, that’s a long shot, but it could happen.

And your other choice is to reduce the damage dealt to one of your Forwards by 2000.

This card will work great against Dull/Freeze decks.

28-097H – Vaan

Even with all the Moogle Bounty Mayhem cards we have received. Vaan is here to take that deck over the top.

We, have removal, plenty of it, we have seek and play, but Vaan, he’s different.

Vaan can attack twice in the same turn, making him a Forward worth having on the field at all times.

And, if you ever need more cards, just discard a MBM character and you will draw 2 Cards.

28-098H – Garnet

Garnet comes on in, reveals the top 5 cards of your deck, and you get to grab a Final Fantasy IX Character and add it to your hand, if you find one there.

If you find one Garnet’s total cost will be 2CP, if not then 4CP it is.

After that she has an ongoing effect, that will make all of your opponent’s Summons cost 1 more CP.

And at 3 points of damage, your Summons will cost 1CP less.

.

28-099C – Musician

A Backup with a bell?

Musician our elemental Water Backup, that needs 5 Backups on the field in order to use it’s ability.

And, what does that ability do?

It returns one of your opponent’s Forwards to their owner’s hand.

And that’s it.

It can be useful in a pinch, but I prefer abilities that break Characters.

28-100C – Sage

And, right after our Elemental Backup, we get our Water Crystal Backup.

Who does the same thing that the other Crystal Backups of this set do.

Enters the field, gain a Crystal.

Leaves the field, gain a Crystal.

.
.

28-101L – Steiner

First off, these cards look great. Hopefully they’ll fix the foiling on these this set.

Steiner, a 6 cost Forward with 9000 power, that when Steiner enters the field, you can grab a Final Fantasy IX Character from your Break Zone and play it on to the field. Up to 4CP, which is plenty of Characters to choose. Depending on who you choose to play, Steiner’s cost can go down to 2CP.

And, that’s not all.

Nope. Steiner wouldn’t be a Legend if that were it.

All Final Fantasy IX Characters, except Steiner can not be chosen by your opponent’s abilities.

So, how will we protect Steiner?

Just use Alert, which does the same thing for himself, but only lasts until the end of the turn.

28-102R – Princess Sarah

This isn’t bad at all.

Princess Sarah, comes on to the field, and you’ll draw a card and gain a Crystal.

What makes this better than other cards that allow you to draw a card, is that you can look at the top card of your deck.
If you like it, keep it there.

If you don’t, you can send it to the bottom of your deck, and grab the next card.

It’s worth a play, if you have nothing else in your hand.

.

28-103C – Astrologian

For 1CP you can gain a Crystal and a Meat Shield.

This card hold much value for your Crystal deck.

Not only does it give you a Crystal for 1CP, you can play 3 of them at the same time, and those 3 will block incoming attacks for you.

You can also use that Crystal to draw a card, but I suggest you put your EX Burst on top, and get a point of damage the next turn.

But, that depends on which EX Burst you put on top.

28-104C – Sorbet

This is your main Backup for MBM.

Also known as a color fixer.

Sorbet, can pay for MBM cards with any element. Making it easier to play all 6 MBM Monsters.

I would Mulligan if I didn’t get this card in my first draw.

.

28-105C – Trion

At 5CP and 9K power, you’d think that Trion is just your typical Common Forward. And, I would say you are right.

The only difference is that if you have a Princess on the field, Trion’s cost goes down by 2CP to 3CP.

Which is a lot better that 5.

And every time Trion attacks, you get to draw a card.

And, then you get to discard a card.

That’s a bout it.

28-106R – Hurdy EX

Search for that Forward.

Add it to your hand.

If you haven’t noticed, there are a few MBM cards that search, grab from the Break Zone, or play to the field. And, that’s a good thing.

You’re going to be able to fill up that board very quickly with these cards.

Yes, we’ll take 3. Wait, we already have 3.

28-107R – Pylraster

Dinosaurs are coming back from extinction. We just got our second Dinosaur, and this one increases the damage Dinasours deal to Forwards by 5000.

Since our other Dinosaur doesn’t deal damage, Pylraster can only target itself with his ability.

Pylraster can also become a Forward as well.

Now there is one more target, and that is Bartz (1-081R). So, there is that.

.

28-108R – Honey B. Lovely

Hmm, that’s different.

Honey B. Lovely comes in and everybody gets to draw a card.

And, at 3 points of damage, your opponent will then places a card from their hand to the bottom of their deck.

It’s not bad, especially for 2CP, and then you have a Meat Shield to protect you from your opponent’s attackers.

.

28-109C – Penelo

You would have thought that this card would have been more than just a Common. A Rare perhaps, but I’m not complaining. Not much.

Penelo comes in and grabs an MBM character from the top 5 cards of your deck.

Which if you’re playing MBM, you’re going to find it 99.99% of the time.

It’s Penelo’s ability that makes her shine.

You can dull 3 MBM Characters, and your opponent will put one of their Forwards into the Break Zone. The good thing is that you can use this as many times as you want during your turn, as long as you have enough MBM Characters on the field.

And, if you need to grant Penelo a little bit of Protection, you can always have Mayakov (15-121R). Who can also play Penelo on to the field.

28-110C – Horne

Horne can become a Free Play quite easily.

If you already have another 2 MBM Characters on the field before Horne comes in you will draw a card.

It’s not bad, it’s just a free way to get another Backup on the board.

And, you can also put Horne into the Break Zone and give one of your MBM Forwards +1000 power.

There are better MBM Backups that you can play. And hopefully we’ll get some new ones in upcoming sets.

.

28-111H – Yuna

I’ve been talking about YRP making a comeback for years. And, I’m not stopping now. We need a new YRP deck, and we need it now.

Yuna is here to help. Wind/Water/Gullwings/FFX. That is the basis of the deck, and Once per turn Yuna will search for a Gullwing and you’ll play it on to the field.

And, whenever a Forward of any element except for Water enters the field, you’ll choose a Forward and they will lose 4000 power. Possibly breaking them. Not all of them, but some for sure. Hopefully.

This is also our Gold Signature card, which looks amazing. I’ll be happy of getting a Full Art of this card, even without the Signature.
.

28-112C – Lion

Am I reading this right?

When Lions enters the field play a Water Forward of cost 6 or less from your hand onto the field?

Lion costs 4 CP.

You’re getting 2 Forwards worth up to 10CP for 4CP. How is that possible? Actually, I don’t care. I’ll take 3 of these and put them in any deck that uses Water.

And, if you have at least 5 Water Forwards on the field. The Water Forwards gain +1000 power.

What’s not to like?

And, how is this a Common?

28-113R – Leonora

Not bad.

For 3CP and a Summon you can send a Forward to the Break Zone. Your opponent will choose which one, but it’s still one less Forward on their field.

If you don’t have a Summon in your hand, lucky for you that you will draw a card, before you discard a card. Meaning you might find a Summon there.

After that you have a body with 5000 power on the field ready to attack or block.

.
28-114L – Rosa

You see this?

Rosa is bringing everyone out to play.

Rosa enters the field for 6CP, and searches for a Final Fantasy IV Forward and adds it to your hand.

After that you can play 2 FFIV Forwards from your hand on to the field. Only thing is that their combined cost has to be 4CP or less. Which isn’t that hard to do, considering we have a plethora of 2 cost Forwards, you should be fine.

21-041C – Evil Weapon

Doesn’t look that evil. Evil Weapon looks like he belongs in the hit movie “Ghoulies”.

If you haven’t watched it, you should. If you like 80’s horror movies that aren’t actually that scary.

Let’s see now. Evil Weapon cost a a whole whopping 1CP. And, for what it does is pretty cheap. I know some people just play certain cards just to gain a Crystal. And Evil Weapon here, will give you a Crystal, and also deal 4000 damage to one of your opponent’s Forwards.

Evil Weapon, is more like a side weapon, a pistol to your shotgun. If your Forward doesn’t Break your opponent’s Forward, just use this Evil Weapon to finish it off.

21-042H – Vaan

If you’re playing Mono-Wind, Vaan could be of some use. As he’ll be a free Forward, if you already have 7 Wind Characters on the field.

If not he costs a whopping 7CP to play a Forward with 9000 power.

Not much to say about this one. I’ll probably just leave it on the side to gather dust.

But, not all is bad.

If you already cast 3 cards, you draw a card. So, you might come up with +2CP.

But, is it really worth it?

21-043C – Viera

Now this is a decent card as well.

Play Viera onto the field and grab one of the top 2 cards of your deck. The other one goes to the bottom of your deck.
And when Viera is active on the field, you can dull Viera and do it once again.

3CP for a Backup with a great ability.

You can’t go wrong with Viera.

21-044C – Dancer

Technically, this is a free card.

A 4CP Forward, that gets reduced to 2CP if you already have a Dancer on the field. And if you paid the cost with a couple of Backups, you can choose to activate those Backups, by Dancer’s ability. Which goes off once she enters the field.

That brings us to a total of 0CP.

Not bad for an 8000 power Forward.

21-045C – Princess Goblin

This is the kind of Backup that everyone likes. A searcher.

Princess Goblin enters the field and allows you to search for a Warrior of Light, or a Princess Sarah.

She comes in does her job, and hopefully gets your board to where you need it to be.

If not, well, at least she’ll provide a Crystal Point once per turn.

21-046C – Cid (II)

Cid is here staring at you to make sure that you’re going to play this card.

And, as long as you have cards that can warp in, there’s a 94.38762% chance that you will. Yes, this conclusion came off of extended research and as of December, 5th 2023, this is accurate. It might not be in the next hour or so, but we’re sticking to our research. And stuff.

Cid (II) comes in and you’re searching for a card that Warps.

You Warp that card right away.

Next turn, you’ll be sending Cid to the Break Zone, in order to speed up the Warp process.

Simple, and effective.

I like it.

21-047C – Summoner

Summoner summons a Summon.

Well, that’s what Summoners are supposed to do.

Once Summoner comes in, you get to grab a Wind Summon from your deck.

And, Every time that you cast a Summon, Summoner gains +2000 power. From how I’m reading it, you can cast a couple of Summons and keep stacking that +2000 power on top of the other. Plus. it’s a Standard Unit so you can have 3 of these on the board at any time.

Combine this with Meia (16-123L) and you have a reduced Summon cost. Add in plenty of low cost Summons and you’ll have 3 Summoners who serve as Meat Shields, or attackers.

Meat Shield just sounds better.

21-048L – Princess Sarah

Look no further. If you needed a way to keep Feolthanos on the board, so he can see EX Bursts, Princess Sarah can help you out.

Once per turn you can choose a Forward and that Forward cannot be chosen by EX Bursts.

After that, just dull and discard a Princess to make the next damage dealt to it 0.

Now, you don’t need to have Feolthanos, but I’d say you play these cards together.

21-049R – Sarah (Mobius)

Yes, she gives a +1K buff to all of your Forwards.

Yes, she is a 2 cost Backup.

Yes, she is probably good for draft.

No, I will not be playing this card, actually maybe I will.

I would have said to just go ahead and play Opus I Maria, for 3CP and the same buff to all of your Forwards, but what’s stopping you from playing both at the same time.

I started thinking this card wasn’t that great, it’s decent, but I started changing my mind the more I started writing about it.

I might give it a shot.

21-050H – Sophia (SOPFFO)

For a second there I read that Biker Mage.

You can throw Sophia and Summoner in the same deck. Both grab Summons, and when a Summon is cast they both have abilities that can go off.

Sophia here will deal 5000 damage to a Forward when you cast a Summon. Sure, you can only use this once, as you’ll have to dull Sophia, but that 5k can help out. Especially if the Summon you cast has dealt some damage to a Forward but not enough to Break it.

I wouldn’t call this a Hero, more like a Rare.

21-051R – Tiamat

Chocobos are going to make a comeback, just you watch.

I’m just saying that cause I can’t think of another Mono-Wind deck at the moment.

If you are playing Mono-Wind, you will be playing Tiamat. 4CP/8K body, throw in Opus 1 Maria and a bunch of Chocobos, and you have an unstoppable beast.

Hey, that’s pretty much what Tiamat is.

21-052R – Niini

This isn’t bad, especially for the cost.

1CP allows you to look at the top card of your deck. If you like what you see, you can keep it there. If not send that card to the bottom of your deck.

If you cast at least 3 cards this turn, you can grab that card, or grab the next one if you already sent it to the bottom of your deck.

Good thing about this is if you can check to see if you have an EX Burst coming up. If you do you can leave it there and when you take Damage you’ll know that you’ll have a surprise for your opponent.

21-053L – Balthier

Even though I’ll probably never play a Sky Pirates deck. This is a great card.

You can probably just throw it in any Mono-Wind deck, and you’ll do great.

Because every time a Wind Character comes in, you’ll be dealing 3000 damage to one of your opponents Forwards. And 3000 is enough to Break some Forwards, and then I’m sure you’ll have a way or two to finish them off.

Now if you’re playing Sky Pirates, Balthier will be able to Activate all of your Characters once per turn. Right at that moment when you get into your Main Phase 2, you can discard a Sky Pirate and have Balthier’s ability go off, and you’re left with a bunch of active Characters, ready to block, and what not.

21-054H – Pandemonium

And, here I thought this was a Backup.

For 2CP this is great card. Summon comes in and if you played a couple of cards this turn Pandemonium will deal 5000 damage to one of your opponent’s high cost Forwards, and Pandemonium searches for a high cost Forward for you.
If Pandemonium is the first card you played, you can pick one or the other.

Still great for 2CP.

21-055H – Penelo

These Sky Pirates just keep getting better and better.

Kind of wants me to make a Sky Pirate deck.

Penelo, a 2CP/5000 power Forward. that activates 2 Characters when she enters the field, as long as you have at least 2 Sky Pirates already on the field.

The best part is that when Penelo is sent to the Break Zone you can grab a 3 cost Sky Pirate from your Break Zone and add it to your hand. I think Balthier would be the perfect card to pick.

21-056R – Galeserpent General Najelith

Here we have the pixelated 3d graphics of FFXI. Even though this was on the PS2, the graphics look like they came from the FFVII era. Enough of the art.

It’s actually not that bad of a card.

Galeserpent General Najelith’s cost can be reduced by 2 if you already have a couple of Wind Characters on the field. Thus making her, a 2 cost Forward with 8000 power.

She cannot be chosen by your opponent’s abilities, giving her protection from that, and you can dull her and deal a Forward 4000 damage. This is where Penelo and Balthier come in.

Dull, 4000 damage, activate, Dull, 4000 damage, activate, dull, 4000 damage.

That’s 12,000 damage right there.

21-057R – Fran

Can’t go wrong with 1CP.

Especially since Fran grants protection to Balthier.

And, if Fran is in the Break Zone, you can play Balthier and grab Fran from the Break Zone and play her onto the field. At the small cost of 1 Wind Crystal Point.

Now I kinda, want to see what Balthier does.

21-058C – Machina

Finally a Machina that has synergy with your Type-0 Cadets.

And at only 2CP this is a great card.

If you have at least 2 Cadets on the field, Machina has 8000 power, Haste and Machina cannot be chosen by your opponent’s Summons.

Let’s not forget Armor Break, if you need to you can break a high cost Forward.

I do like it. It’s probably time to dust off that old Cadets deck and see what happens when we add Machina.

21-059C – Dragoon

Play Dragoon early, as your second or third Backup. As, that’s when you’ll get the most value from Dragoon.

Once he comes in you’ll gain a Crystal, and if you have 3 or less Backups on the field you get to draw a card. Which makes Dragoon cost a total of 1CP.

And, that is all. Simple, effective and straight to the point.

Not much else going on here.

21-060R – Rikku EX

Most of these Wind cards work well together.

Rikku here is another example of why you should be playing Mono-Wind.

When she enters the field, you’ll reveal the top card of your deck, and since it’s a Wind card, and you’re playing Mono-Wind you’ll just go ahead and add that card to your hand.

This also activates as an EX Burst when you get that point of damage, and Rikku pops her head.

And at 3 points of damage, Rikku gains +2000 power making her a 7000 power Forward.

Hokuten – Version 1.02

We’re going to do this a tiny bit different. We already know we’re not building and strong decks. We’re just making decks to have fun with. Zalbaag’s deck will be no different. In fact we’re going to look straight into Final Fantasy Tactics and see what we can come up with. Let’s take a look into the battles.

But, first.

We can’t have a Hokuten Deck without the Lord Commander himself, so we are throwing in 3 copies.

First battle Zalbaag commands Argath (or Algus) to kill Tietra, so we need Argath in. 3 copies because Argath makes your opponent discard a card when he enters the field.

Along with a couple Knights and Black Mages, although the Tactics Knights aren’t great at all. Just bodies that have no abilities. And the Black Mages, are just a little better than the Knights. Maybe we’ll just lave them out.

The next battle Zalbaag is in he is your ally, So, we’ll be adding in Ramza. Two of them to be exact Ramza (3-119L) just for the fact that he gains +1000 power for every Final Fantasy Tactics Forward that you control, and Ramza (7-118L), because he can become a cheap and powerful Forward if you have a lot of Forwards on the field before you play him. And, If this Ramza has over 10,000 power, every time he attacks, you can break one of your opponents Forwards, as long as it is 3CP or less.

Next battle Zalbaag is a part of the Undead. and fights against you with Archaeodaemon and Ultima Demon and we have none of those Monsters as cards yet. I thought this was going to be a lot more interesting than this.

Let’s see what else we can add? How about Dycedarg (4-105R), he is Zalbaag’s brother and do work together. Up until a certain point, I’ll leave that at that. Plus when he enters the Break Zone, he Dycedarg deals 7000 damage to one of your opponents active Forwards.

Next let’s find a way to search for Zalbaag. Aldo (10-086C) allows you to search for a Lightning Forward, and Duke Goltana (1-134R) allows you to search for a Knight. And, since Ramza and Dycedarg are both Knights, I think we finally have a plan for this deck.

Knights it is.

So, we need Ovelia (1-156C) to give all of our knights +1000 power. We’ll also add in Class Sixth Moogle (9-097C) to help us pay for Water. Now that we have water on hand, We shall add Beatrix (12-103H) to lower the cost of our Knights.

Agrias, we need Agrias (7-106L). She costs 6CP but with Beatrix it’ll be 4CP and if you find a 3CP Character it’ll be 1CP.

We’re going to add Princess Sarah (11-128H) just so we can play Argath. We’d take Argath out, but he plays a part in Zalbaag’s story.

That means we have Ice, let’s add some more Ice. Lasswell (16-042R) to dull and Freeze, and have your opponent discard cards. Charlotte (13-023R) cause she is a great Meat Shield.

As for Summons, we’ll take Ixion (17-090R), Leviathan (2-140C) and Shiva (19-022R)

And, there you have it Hokuten V1.02

Forwards

3x – Argath (1-033C)
3x – Beatrix (12-103H)
3x – Charlotte (13-023R)
3x – Lasswell (16-042R)
3x – Zalbaag (1-136C)
3x – Ramza (3-119L)
3x – Dycedarg (4-105R)
3x – Ramza (5-118L)
3x – Agrias (7-106L)

Backups

3x – Princess Sarah (11-128H)
3x – Ovelia (1-156C)
3x – Class Sixth Moogle (9-097C)
3x – Duke Goltanna (1-134R)
3x – Aldo (10-086C)

Summons

3x – Leviathan (2-140C)
3x – Ixion (17-090R)
2x – Shiva (19-022R)

This one does seem a little forced, compared to other deck ideas we have done.

More Delays

Well, it looks like we have more delays coming up. First it was the Sephiroth Tins, and now Opus XIV is delayed and so is a new 2-Player Starter Set. But, at least we know of these ones ahead of time, other than right before release.

It doesn’t look like the Chaos Boss Deck will receive any delays, even though my distributor has no clue as to what’s going on with it. And Opus XIII is right around the corner.

On the other hand we had a new spoiler. Bhunivelze PR-091/13-062H. Is it just me or are the Pre-release promos always Hero cards? I’ll have to take a look into that.

Bhunivelze
10CP – Earth
Forward – God
10000

The cost required to cast Bhunivelze is reduced by 2 for each Backup of a different element you control, other than Multi-Element.
Damage 3 – Bhunivelze gains Brave and “Bhunivelze can attack twice in the same turn”
Damage 6 – When Bhunivelze attacks, Choose 1 Character. Break it.

Even if your playing Mono Earth at 10CP, this card is a power house. Throw in Enna Kros (1-095R)for some +1000, might as well throw in Maria (1-083H) for an additional +1000. And that right there brings Bhunivelze down to 8CP. Can’t forget about Princess Sarah (11-128H), which will also let you pay for your Backups much easier as she counts as any color CP. Dull for +1000. This brings Bhunivelze to 13000 and 6CP.

He’ll slowly clean the board, and your other forwards can go for the kill.
