Hokuten – Version 1.02

We’re going to do this a tiny bit different. We already know we’re not building and strong decks. We’re just making decks to have fun with. Zalbaag’s deck will be no different. In fact we’re going to look straight into Final Fantasy Tactics and see what we can come up with. Let’s take a look into the battles.

But, first.

We can’t have a Hokuten Deck without the Lord Commander himself, so we are throwing in 3 copies.

First battle Zalbaag commands Argath (or Algus) to kill Tietra, so we need Argath in. 3 copies because Argath makes your opponent discard a card when he enters the field.

Along with a couple Knights and Black Mages, although the Tactics Knights aren’t great at all. Just bodies that have no abilities. And the Black Mages, are just a little better than the Knights. Maybe we’ll just lave them out.

The next battle Zalbaag is in he is your ally, So, we’ll be adding in Ramza. Two of them to be exact Ramza (3-119L) just for the fact that he gains +1000 power for every Final Fantasy Tactics Forward that you control, and Ramza (7-118L), because he can become a cheap and powerful Forward if you have a lot of Forwards on the field before you play him. And, If this Ramza has over 10,000 power, every time he attacks, you can break one of your opponents Forwards, as long as it is 3CP or less.

Next battle Zalbaag is a part of the Undead. and fights against you with Archaeodaemon and Ultima Demon and we have none of those Monsters as cards yet. I thought this was going to be a lot more interesting than this.

Let’s see what else we can add? How about Dycedarg (4-105R), he is Zalbaag’s brother and do work together. Up until a certain point, I’ll leave that at that. Plus when he enters the Break Zone, he Dycedarg deals 7000 damage to one of your opponents active Forwards.

Next let’s find a way to search for Zalbaag. Aldo (10-086C) allows you to search for a Lightning Forward, and Duke Goltana (1-134R) allows you to search for a Knight. And, since Ramza and Dycedarg are both Knights, I think we finally have a plan for this deck.

Knights it is.

So, we need Ovelia (1-156C) to give all of our knights +1000 power. We’ll also add in Class Sixth Moogle (9-097C) to help us pay for Water. Now that we have water on hand, We shall add Beatrix (12-103H) to lower the cost of our Knights.

Agrias, we need Agrias (7-106L). She costs 6CP but with Beatrix it’ll be 4CP and if you find a 3CP Character it’ll be 1CP.

We’re going to add Princess Sarah (11-128H) just so we can play Argath. We’d take Argath out, but he plays a part in Zalbaag’s story.

That means we have Ice, let’s add some more Ice. Lasswell (16-042R) to dull and Freeze, and have your opponent discard cards. Charlotte (13-023R) cause she is a great Meat Shield.

As for Summons, we’ll take Ixion (17-090R), Leviathan (2-140C) and Shiva (19-022R)

And, there you have it Hokuten V1.02

Forwards

3x – Argath (1-033C)
3x – Beatrix (12-103H)
3x – Charlotte (13-023R)
3x – Lasswell (16-042R)
3x – Zalbaag (1-136C)
3x – Ramza (3-119L)
3x – Dycedarg (4-105R)
3x – Ramza (5-118L)
3x – Agrias (7-106L)

Backups

3x – Princess Sarah (11-128H)
3x – Ovelia (1-156C)
3x – Class Sixth Moogle (9-097C)
3x – Duke Goltanna (1-134R)
3x – Aldo (10-086C)

Summons

3x – Leviathan (2-140C)
3x – Ixion (17-090R)
2x – Shiva (19-022R)

This one does seem a little forced, compared to other deck ideas we have done.

Lord of Crags

It’s all Primals, as far as the eye can see. Titan will shake things up as he enters the field.

On to the card

7CP/Earth
Forward
Job : Primal
Category : XIV
Legend
9000 Power

“When Titan, Lord of Crags enters the field, break all the Forwards with power lass than Titan, Lord of Crags. When 5 or more Forwards are put from the field into the Break Zone by this effect, Titan, Lord of Crags deals your opponent 1 point of damage.”

The way I see it, Titan works like your Opus I Shantotto, but with added benefits. He’s a Forward and he can still knock your opponent silly. Although he might not be able to completely wipe out the board, he is highly likely to deal your opponent a point of Damage for your troubles.

Now. What would you say if we used Heretical Knight Garland (9-061R)? Not a lot of synergy but, you will be playing Garland for 2 CP after you played Titan onto the field.

Earth and Water go pretty good together. Ovelia (13-090L)  might be a good card to play as you can use Aegis on Titan. And when Titan is about to be sent into the Break Zone for any reason, you can bring him back to the field.

Any other suggestions?

Garland, to the Future

Here we are, starting our Opus XIV Weekly, Card of the Week. First off none other than Garland himself. Better be careful we don’t step into a time loop.

On to the card

4CP/Fire
Forward
Job : Knight
Category – I
8000 Power
Legend

“If Garland is dealt damage by a Summon or an ability, the damage becomes 0 instead.

When a Backup is put from the field into the Break Zone, draw 1 card.

Flare (S)(D): Choose 1 Forward. Break it. Then, your opponent selects 1 Backup they control. Put it into the Break Zone.”

Garland has Protection from the get go, as he can not be damaged by Summons or abilities. Which is a plus. The only way to get rid of him without him blocking or getting blocked is by cards that will outright Break him.

Now anytime a Backup is put into the Break Zone for any reason, you get to draw 1 card. Yours or your opponents.

And, Flare. For another Garland and a dull. You can Break an opponent and make your opponent put a Backup into the
Break Zone. Now as we said in the Fire Review we did, you can Break your own Forwards if you’d like. Oelde Leonis, you can then grab a Standard Unit from the Break Zone, and draw one card.

You can probably play Fire/Water Knights.

Add Gawain (12-126R) who will search for Garland when he is played on the field. And he’ll also search for a Water Knight. Agrias, Beatrix, and Steiner all have multiple versions you can play. Agrias (13-086R) is a great one which works well with Opus XIII Ovelia. Beatrix (12-103H) Will keep giving +2K to all your Forwards when she or a Knight enters the field. Plus she reduces the cost of all your Knights by 2 but, only once per turn. And, Steiner, we’ll go with Opus IV. Cause, why not?

Heir, to the Throne

Let’s take a dive into the Water. Legend, that is. Ovelia, Princess of Ivalice, the rightful heir to the throne.

Let’s take a look

3CP/Water
Backup
Job : Princess
Category FFT
Legend

“When a Category FFT Forward you control is put from the field into the Break Zone, draw 1 card. This effect will trigger only once per turn.

Aegis (S)(D): Choose 1 Forward you control. Until the end of the turn, it gains Haste and “When this Forward is put from the field into the Break Zone, play this Forward from the Break Zone onto the field dull””

Looks like we’re playing with Final Fantasy Tactics. As we mentioned before, in the Water Review, about the little combo with Marach (13-080C). You will need to find a way to be able to splash different colors. I was more excited about this card when it was released, but now it seems like will work better in a theme deck. Which is not a bad thing. I have yet to look into new decks to see how this card is being used. My guess would be a Lightning/Water deck. Not only to play Marach, but you also get Ramza (13-121R). Hopefully, you’ll play him for 4CP and your opponent will break a forward and return one to his hand.

But, with Aegis, there should be plenty of cards that you’ll want to bounce back after they have been broken. Aegis almost works like Rinoa’s (6-041L) entry ability, the difference is a card has to be put in the Break Zone to come back. Viking (4-133C) might be a fun one to play, as you’ll be drawing a card when it leaves the field and when it comes back in.

A couple of good card to also have on hand would be Sara (13-093H) the royalty searcher, and Simon (13-094C) as he’ll be able to grab Ovelia from the Break Zone. Giving you more Ovelia cards to reuse her ability.

Did we miss anything? Let us know in the comments.

Opus XIII – Water Review

13-086R – Agrias EX

This card was made to be played with Ovelia (13-090L). Of course, you can play any other Princess for the EX Burst, but Ovelia is the one that you’ll be able to keep bringing Agrias back from the Break Zone

13-087C – Delusory Knight

Just your regular 4CP/8K that also searches for a Manikin of a different element.

13-088H – Elle

Discard 2 cards when you attack to get a free shot? We like Cheap … I mean free shots at Damage. Unless your opponent can find a way to get rid of Elle, you’ll have the match in 7 turns or less.

Considering you have enough cards not to run out.

13-089C – Oilboyle

Draw 1/Discard 1 all for 1CP. Becomes a Forward like the other Monsters from the other elements.

13-090L – Ovelia

How many Tactics forwards are there that are good? Agrias (13-086R), which will let you draw a card everytime she comes in? Marach (13-080C), to Ping 4K damage when he comes back in? Ramza (13-121R) to break 2 forwards your opponent controls and 2 more to their hand? Orlandeau (4-101H) to break a Damaged Forward? Delita (13-111C), to Break Marach and have him come back in for another 4K?

Wait a second. You can Play Marach, Ping for 4K. Use Aegis on Marach. Have him attack, hopefully he gets blocked and Breaks. And then he comes back to the field, dull and deals another 4K to your opponent. It might just work. If it doesn’t play Delita and break Marach.

13-091H – Cagnazzo

It should be pretty easy to get 3 Water Counters on Cagnazzo. 7 might be a little difficult, considering the 4K body. But, if he can stick around long enough, you’ll be able to get a board wipe.

13-092C – Sage

Flip cards until either an Earth or a Lightning card pops up. End of story.

13-093H – Sara

Searching for Royalty. Check

Searching for Ovelia. Check

Add to hand. Check

Hopefully you’re playing a Tactics Deck. No? Not to worry there’s plenty of cards Sara can search for.

13-094C – Simon

Here’s another card you’ll like to have on hand. Can bring back any Tactics character back from the Break Zone.

13-095C – Tonogiri

Doesn’t have to be your opponents Forward. You can return one of your own cards to replay it for it’s on entry ability.

13-096R – Nichol

+1K to all Multi-Element Forwards, plus you get to draw a card when one enters. Sign me up.

13-097C – Viking

Why would it say of cost 3 or less, if the most expensive card is 3CP. Must mean that there will be more Viking support coming. We shall finally build a deck to rival Chocobos.

But enough of that. If you’re playing all 4 Vikings 3 copies of each. That’s 12 cards. 12 divided by 50 means that you have a 25% chance for any of those cards to be a Viking, that you’ll play on the field.

13-098R – Fina

Easy way to return a pesky Forward to your opponents hand.

13-099C – Yuke

Always a good idea to be able to grab a Character from your Break Zone. Wether you’re only playing one copy of a certain card. Or you ran out of cards to cast that Special ability.

This one will see some play. If I find a deck to put it in.

13-100R – Leviathan EX

Save a Forward with this Summon. Reduce Damage by 5000. And If you’re at 5 Damage you can Protect all your Forwards from Summons and Abilities. This one will save you at least a couple of times. Especially if you’re playing against Dadaluma and Cactuars. Oh, wait Dadaluma is banned.

13-101R – Luka

+1K to all Brave Exvius Forwards. These are cards that I always like to play, give your Forwards a little boost.

13-102C – Refia

Need to Activate a Forward? Just use this ability. Only costs 1CP and Dull this Backup. Would have been better if it was any Forward, but this will work.
